Businessman Wilbur Foshay was inspired by the Washington Monument when commissioning this skyscraper. The building opened in 1929 with John Phillip Sousa playing a march composed for the celebration. But just six weeks later the Depression ruined Foshay's company and his check to Sousa bounced. Though the building is now surrounded by taller towers, the Foshay remains a favorite of the Minneapolis skyline.
