The Mission San Antonio de Valero was founded in about 1718. Construction of the stone chapel began in 1744 but was still unfinished when the mission was abandoned forty-nine years later. During the Texas Revolution, the half-built church became a battleground where an outnumbered band of Texian volunteers was defeated and killed in 1836. Nowadays the building has been restored as a shrine for the remembrance of the battle for Texas independence.
